Kumbh Mela Allahabad — Why is it so Special?
History of Kumbh Mela – The mention of Kumbh is found in ancient Hindu Purana, the Bhagwat Purana. The story behind the start of Kumbh is that when demigods had lost all their powers to a curse given by Durvasa Muni, they approached Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma to find a solution to regain the lost power.
Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma directed all the Devtas to the Supreme Godhead, Lord Vishnu as he being the Supreme will be able to guide all. All Devtas offered prayers to Lord Vishnu which pleased the Supreme Godhead and Lord Vishnu appeared. Knowing everything as always, he instructed them to churn the Ocean of Milk Ksheera Sagar.
Lord Vishnu advised all the demigods to make peace with Demons as the only way to churn the milk ocean was when both demigods and demons worked together. As instructed, demigods called it truce with demons and worked together to churn the ocean of milk.
Vasuki, the biggest and serpents of all became the rope and Mandara Mountain became the churning rod. While Churning, the first thing that came out was poison which was consumed by Lord Shiva, there were other attractive things as well that came out but both demigods and demons had their eyes and focus struck on Amrit as this Amrit had the strength to make either Devtas or the Rakshas immortal.
When Amrit finally came out , a fight between Devtas and Rakshas began over the consumption of Amrit which went on for 12 days and 12 nights which is equal to 12 human years. Lord Vishnu who appeared as Mohini escaped with the pot of Amrit and while flying over the sky Amrit was spilled and dropped at four places, Allahbad, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik.
